CACIB udstilling i Lingen
CACIB show in Lingen
On April 27th Marianne, Naomi, Bacchus and myself went to Lingen. We stayed at a small and cosy hotel in the country called Landgasthaus Berns. This hotel was placed only around 20 minutes drive from the show area.
Early next morning we headed for the show to get hold of two of the very much sought after cages which were placed in two big outdoor tents as the Great Dane show ring was also placed outside. Because we came this early it showed out that we could freely pick between the cages, which was really nice. The weather forecast said that it would rain and it also did when we arrived but as the harlequin and black Great Danes were about to be judged, the sun began to shine.
The show was well arranged and the rings were nice and big. Though there was a long waiting time before it was our turn to enter the ring as all dogs had to to stand incredibly long time in the ring. Bacchus was perfectly concentrated and cooperative, and he showed himself in his most favourable light. Unfortunately he only got a Sehr Gut, which surprised me, due to the generous critique he received.
We hope for a better result in Neumünster, I truly believe that he deserves it.

Sidste kontrol
Last check-up
Bacchus was at the last check-up at the vet today, and the eye looked really nice. There was a big improvement from last check, so we will stop the after treatment from tomorrow. If everything goes well, the white spot on the eye might be as good as gone in 6 months time or so. The vet does not believe that Bacchus currently has lost more than what corresponds to about 1/10 of the sight.
With all the progress both dogs and I soon have to do something seriously again. The showtraining begins in April and hopefully we will soon be able to start up our small and cheerful amateur rally obedience team as well.
The hairs which were weared off by the helmet has slowly begun to grow out so soon he will be ready to show off in the show rings again. For the time being he is signed up for the CACIB show in Lingen (April) and the CACIB show in Neumünster (June). We haven’t yet tried to be judged by the two judges which are going to judge at these two shows, but there’s got to be a first time for everything and I am looking so much forward to these shows! :-)
In April, most likely in the Easter, depending on the wheather Bacchus and I are going to visit Maria and Mie (Showdanes), so that they can take some new pictures of him and I am excited to see what the the outcome will be :-)
Endelig…
Slipper Bacchus for at have hjelm på.
Finally…
Bacchus can get rid of the helmet. Miraculously (and due to a lot of treatment) the eye has healed very well since the stitches were removed. He still needs to be careful, but now he is allowed to run around in places where he doesn’t risk to run into something which he can’t see.
With a lot of aftercare and continuously progress the result should be that the scar tissue almost disappears leaving the eye with only a minimal spot. Together with the vet I looked at pictures from when the wound was worst to now where the blur covering the cornea isn’t as outstanding as it has been, where the red spot on the cornea that previously looked like a burn has shrunk significantly, the hole which is now gone and the thick blood vessels which almost aren’t visible anymore. It is impressive to see how much has happened.
In about a week or so he will hopefully be able to romp a bit with other dogs again.
Endelig lidt gode nyheder
I torsdags (1. marts) fik Bacchus fjernet stingene, da dyrlægen vurderede, at øjet var helet tilstrækkeligt.
Finally some good news
Thursday last week (March 1st) Bacchus stitches were removed as the vet estimated that the healing of the eye was sufficient. The eye is still treated with a special ointment 5 times a day as the wound is still described as critical. He still needs to wear helmet and things like jumping, playing and running are continuously strictly forbidden. It’s becoming quite difficult to keep him calm and relaxed as he really needs to stretch out, which is completely understandable. It isn’t easy to be a young blusterer with lots of energy, when you aren’t allowed to do anything at all.
Monday next week (March 12th) he is going for a check –up at the vet, who will let us know if he has passed the most critical phase. If this is the case, the vet will be able to make a plan which shows us when Bacchus can start play and run again. Though the temporary estimate is that it will take around 3-4 months until the risk is over provided that everything continues to go well. As the things are at the moment Bacchus will not go blind, but he will get poor eyesight as he might always have a spot on his cornea. Right now, we live from one day to the next and hope for the best.
When we are with Bacchus and are able to keep an eye with him, we take off the helmet and every time I look at him, I am almost overwhelmed by the beauty of his head and his wonderful expression, and each time this happens I just love him even more :-)
More bad news
Yesterday the vet told us that the healing of Bacchus cornea wasn’t satisfying and therefore his eyelid was sewed together again. Thursday next week, he needs to go through the exact same procedure as he did yesterday meaning that he will have the stitches removed while being under general anaesthesia. If the cornea doesn’t heal, another surgery is needed and this surgery means that his mucous membrane must be sewed around the eye.
No matter what happens, the vet don’t believe that Bacchus will ever get normal vision in the eye again. Besides he needs to go through a long period with aftercare, but unfortunately we are far from there yet. Poor Bacchus have to content himself with only one eye for one more week.
Tomorrow he is going to swim in the countercurrent pool at Taastrup Hundesvømning, as this is the only way for him to really get rid of his energy (and burn some calories) since he isn’t allowed to play, jump or run. This way he is lowered into the pool, where he is held by a harness and then he needs to swim against the tide. This way there is no risk that he will jump off the ramp or the like and he doesn’t get water in his eye. Last week he managed to swim this way without hurting the eye by using a big drop of water-repellent ointment in the eye, just in case he should get water inside the plastic bag which was wrapped around his eye/head. Round the bag he had his helmet to further protect the eye.
Bad news
What I thought was progress showed out to be the exact opposite. Bacchus huge cornea wound had become even bigger and deeper during the previous weekend. Besides that an injury around the cornea wound had shown up, which burdened the eye to the maximum. A bent nictitating membrane and the lower eyelashes didn’t help the eye to heal but only made things worse. Monday 13th his nictitating membrane was straightened and his eyelid was sewed with 5 stitches avoiding him to wink his eye, as this would burden it. He got a new antibiotic treatment, new pain-relieving pills and a new ointment for his eye and then he needed to rest for 8-10 days. The vet told us that a big portion of luck was needed, if this injury shouldn’t have an effect on his sight.
So far Bacchus has done extremely well with his sewed eyelid, the helmet and the very limited exercise, but it hurts deep inside to see him being in so much bad luck and pain. Wednesday 22nd the vet is going to open his eye to see if it heals correctly. For the sake of Bacchus I really do hope that there is improvement.
A nice weekend
This weekend I arranged a walk/orienteering race in Guldborg. Kosta and I walked the route before everybody else turned up, to become familiar with the paths and chosen areas. We started the walk from my parents house and followed a lot of small and cosy paths in the forest. On the route the dogs and owners had to carry out four contact exercises, which were both interesting and entertaining to watch. To each exercise three bonus questions were attached. These questions were about the participants and their dogs but also about the Great Dane in general. We finished the walk at my parents house where we did a fifth exercise. All dogs lined up and my mother, who doesn’t have the least knowledge about dogs, went from dog to dog to see their teeth and stroke their neck, back and tail. After this she should point out a winner among the dogs and the winner should be the dog who she thought was the most calm and cooperative. Planning the walk was a lot of fun to me and watching the dogs and their owners cooperating to solve the tasks were just as much fun to me. Pictures from the walk will soon be available in the “A little bit of everything” menu.
Bacchus' eye
Finally it seems to go a little forward with Bacchus injuried corneal which he got while we were in Nürnberg, in the middle of last month. With Prevocox (pain-relieving pills), Kloramfenikol, Voltaren, Fucithalmic, Aptus eye drops and serum drops, as well as visits to the vet 1-2 times a week during the last month, and a special helmet instead of a traditional screen (see picture) it now finally seems to go in the right direction. Bacchus has begun to open his eye once in a while, not much but a little, so hopefully the pain will soon disappear and he will avoid walking into signs, door frames, railings and the like, because he can not see anything.
Baby-billeder
Baby-pictures
I have found some baby-pictures of my little sweet Bacchus, and I have created a folder in the "A little bit of everything" menu. Amazing how quickly time flies by :-)
Swimming
We are now at swimming lesson number four and Bacchus walks down the steep ramp all by himself to go swimming. So far he swims once a week, but I hope to make it two times a week. Hopefully all this swimming will develop his chest and make his back straight and with that improve his movements. I wish swimming would also make curly tails straight :-)
When Bacchus has become a better swimmer my intention is to also introduce Kosta to the swimming pool. Looking forward to this day.

Links
Links
Two new links have been added to the Links.menu. Via the first link you can among other things find information about various dogshows in various countries. The proprietor of the website is a Great Dane/Deutsche Doggen judge and besides that she owns kennels Elderberry's Deutsche Doggen. In my eyes she does a huge piece of work with regards to guidance and the like and she seems to be very enthusiastic about her dogs and well... enthusiatic about Deutsche Doggen in general. Just take a look at her very inspiring website www.zevens.de. So far I can only support many of her values, opinions and projects, and I believe that showdanes.de is a great initiative.
Julegaven - en ny seng
Ser ud til at være godkendt :-)
The Christmas present - a new bed
Looks like it is approved :-)

Dortmund
Was a great pleasure. The best thing about the weekend was that Bacchus did such a great job in the ring. He worked better than ever before and it paid off!!! I had prepared myself for 2 x SG because Bacchus seems to be two steps behind his competitors as regards to development, but I was wrong. He got V1 with VDH at the Bundessieger show and V1 with VDH and res. CAC at the national show! Wow, I was so proud of my little boy! Even though this wouldn't have been the case, I would still have been extremely proud of him because he showed himself so well.
Both Bacchus and I thought that the hotel room was more than alright, especially Bacchus enjoyed it (see the pictures in the "a little bit of everything" menu), but also the exhibition was very well organised. There were a lot of people but still there was enough space to move around. The rings were a good size and the cage which we had booked for the dogs (Bacchus and Naomi) was perfect and they were able to relax in it.
Naomi also did really well, despite her 6½ year and she got V2 with res. VDH and res. CAC (the res. VDH and the res. CAC count as an ordinary VDH and CAC as both certificates were given at the Bundessieger show) on the first day and V1 with VDH at the second day.
If possible I will definately try and see if we can go to Dortmund again someday.

CACIB.
Rostock
We can now also add Rostock to our list of places where we have participated in shows. Although we had a great day, we might not return to this place again. The hall wasn’t very big and people and dogs almost stood on top of each other, a bit like the exhibition in Tønder here in Denmark. We had to use our elbows to get a small bit of vacant floor space in the middle of everything, but in the end we succeeded. The rings were the smallest rings which I have ever seen and it was almost not possible to run inside them. Besides that the floors were incredibly smooth, also in the ring. The result (SG = Very Good) was a bit disappointing not so much because it wasn’t a premium rank but simply because the same judge gave Bacchus V1, CAC and res. CACIB only two months ago. Though, at the end of the day we were happy about the experience and the many amazing visitors had contributed to this. They were friendly, happy and cozy, as well as very interested in knowing a lot of thing about the dogs and Bacchus posed for them several of times.
I was very terribly seasick both ways, but Bacchus handled the swaying ferry perfectly. He was cool all day, all calm and relaxed. How I just love my fantastic little dog!!! :-)
At Lolland the happy “big brother” Kosta who had spend the day by having fun and teasing his “grandmother” was waiting. As a good end of the day, they played and had a great time in Guldborg most of the evening.
Surprise, surprise!
Surprise, surprise!
What a great surprise it was to come home and see my little sweet boy on the frontpage of Grand Danois Bladet, which is the magazine of the Danish Great Dane Club. The magazine is published four times a year and I would never have thought that I should experience one of my dogs on the frontpage. We think that it is so fantastic that the magazine almost deserves to be framed. Thank you very much Maria Krøyer Reese!
